What our customers are saying about Montem Backpacks and Daypacks

Great pack! Holds a weeks' worth of clothing (and then some) and a few other articles of clothing fairly snugly. Keeps contents clean & packs neatly. Straps are solid and keep the pack clung to my back for great mobility on the trails. Separate zippered pocket in the front and pouch inside allows for some organization :)

Got this for a Secret Santa gift exchange and loved it so much I got one for myself too! Ultra light, perfect amount of pockets and in all the right spots.

This backpack is versatile, super light, and waterproof. It has many compartments and pockets, the colors rock. 100% recommended.

Sasha F.

Great size and build, lightweight. Just right for a day hike, airplane trip or to carry essentials for bike camping. Really like the rain cover too.

Frank Krochmal.

Thus back up is very sharp looking, light but roomy. Ideal for a day on the trails, an overnight trip, but also a walk around the neighborhood.

Giovanna Zerbi.

PERFECT combo for ANY trip. This picture have everything I needed for my last trip to Arizona. Look exactly how they look on the photos! Good price!

Michaela Kilan.

This is a really well-put-together pack- I like the simplicity of design with the outside access mesh pockets that can stow trekking poles, water bottles, cans of beer, and accessories. The foldover top keeps rain out well enough (though we don't often get prolonged downpours in Colorado, so maybe put your goods in a dry sack if you're worried). The straps are comfortable, and there is plenty of room for all your layers and gear.

I hike a lot. When not hiking, I'm walking, like 1 hr-3 times a day. I've been using this pack for all that walking, which includes carrying dress clothes for work, clipping a water bottle to the strap, rain, shine, cold & heat. This is a great daypack! I don't really use the rain cover; I just put a silnylon ultra-light sack inside and put my stuff inside of the silnylon sack. Anyway, great pack.

This daypack is SUPERB. The colors rock, the pack can hold a bunch of weight, it's light, and the straps are actually comfy (no padding, but this soft mesh so I'm a happy camper). The Diadema quickly became my daily pack - both for work and hiking.

Former CamelBack advocate, I was looking for something new. I have enjoyed Montem's other products, so when I saw they released the daypack, I was quick to purchase. The material is great, because I can collapse and fit it in bigger bags without taking up too much space. It also gives me a lot more flexibility on what I put in vs the other bags, which are a little limited due to tight pocket designs. Keep putting out great products and I can't wait to see what you come out with next.

What to consider when choosing the best backpack

When embarking on your outdoor adventures, you need outdoor gear that is dependable, durable, functional, and able to withstand the different weather conditions and surroundings. Here are some things you should consider when choosing a good hiking backpack:

The Purpose of Your Travel

Travel backpacks are smaller than hiking backpacks. With multiple layers and zippered exterior pockets, travel backpacks allow organized access to your items. Most hiking backpacks are more cylindrical in shape, are built for carrying larger loads, and can only be loaded from the top. Hiking backpacks are better for hiking, and a normal travel backpack is a better option when traveling.

The Duration of Your Hiking and Overnight Trips

The duration of your trip will impact the number of items that you have to carry with you. You must choose a backpack that can accommodate all your items in a single bag. If you are going for a short hiking trip, a travel backpack may be sufficient. If you are traveling for more than a week or two, you will need to carry many items which can add up to a considerable pack weight. A backpacking pack for hiking that has strong shoulder straps, hip belts, an adjustable chest strap, a sleeping bag compartment, may be a necessity.

The Activities You Are Planning to Do on Your Trip

Hiking trips often involve a lot of trekking and camping. A heavy backpacking pack may be a major disadvantage when hiking as it will require a great deal of strength to carry the bag. You should consider opting for an ultralight pack or the lightest backpacking pack that can be carried with sufficient ease. On the other hand, if you do not plan to indulge in activities requiring a lot of movement on rough surfaces, you might want to consider a wheeled hiking backpack.

The Conditions of the Places You Intend to Visit

If you are planning to go trekking on hills and mountains, you need a durable backpack that can withstand the cold temperatures and not be affected by the snow (if there is any). On the other hand, if you plan to hike through rainforests and jungles, you need a backpack that is not affected by the constant rainfall and does not get damaged due to the rough terrain. A good quality backpack should be able to serve you well on all kinds of terrain.

Features Of a Good Backpack

Backpacks vary in terms of their quality, functionality, and appearance. There are a few important qualities and functionalities that you should look for in a backpack before you purchase it. This will make your life much easier while you are on your hiking trip.

Water resistance

Regardless of whether you are hiking through deep rainforests and jungles or you are trekking through hills and high mountains, there is certain to be a lot of water involved. You must ensure that you buy a waterproof hiking backpack so that the items inside the bag are safe and do not get wet. For added protection, consider buying a rain cover for your backpack.

Detachable Daypack

Some people prefer to carry items used during the day separately. This makes it more convenient as there is no need to stop during a hike and take everything out of the backpack to access the essential things you need. An outdoor backpack with a removable daypack or fanny pack may be the ideal solution in such scenarios. You can store all the essential items in the daypack and have easy access to these items when you need them.

Heavy-Duty, Lockable Zippers

Hiking backpacks for hiking usually have top-loading openings that are closed using straps and clips along with a lid to cover the opening. It is best to look for a backpack that has very strong chains and zippers that can be locked using good-quality locks to ensure that they are efficient in locking in every item within the bag.

Side Load Access

With a bag that has side-load access, it is easy to get the items that are at the very bottom of the bag without having to reach in from the top. You will also be able to save a lot of time and energy as you do not have to take out or repack things unnecessarily each time you need an item that has been packed towards the bottom of the backpack.

Adequate Ventilation

When you are carrying a closed bag for long hours that is too filled with a number of sweaty items that you may or may not have already used, things can get pretty ugly. Not only will the used items start to smell, but this same smell will also affect the fresh items that you may not have used yet. You should opt for a hiking pack that has adequate ventilation so that the items inside the bag are able to breathe properly.

Padded Hip Belt

A good hip belt is one of the most important features of a good hiking backpack. This will make it very easy for you to carry the bag around without hampering your movements. On long hiking trips through rough terrain, a bag that keeps bouncing off your back can be very uncomfortable. A full-sized padded hip belt will help you to hold the position of the hiking backpack on your back, and you will also be able to move around with greater ease.

Attachments for Tools

Although attachments do not have much effect on the overall comfort of the backpack or the carrying capacity of the bag, they are still very important. Extra straps and attachment points for tools or items that you use on a regular basis, such as water bottles and trekking poles, will allow you to access them whenever you need them without having to stop and unpack your bag.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which backpack is best for hiking?

When choosing a good hiking backpack, you need to consider the duration of your hike and whether the bag you choose has enough space and capacity to carry everything you need. You’ll need to consider the pack weight and the bulky gear you need to carry. If you’re going on a short day hike, a smaller bag should suffice, but if going on a longer multi-day hiking trip, consider a medium-sized bag that has a good internal frame. For extended trips, multi-day hiking backpacks that are able to carry your food, clothing, tent, and sleeping bag, are the best option.

How do I choose a backpack for a day hike?

In order to choose the right hiking backpack for day hikes, you should consider the length of your hike and the activities you plan to enjoy while you’re out there. Generally, a 10-25L bag should be big enough for a day hike.

How do I decide what kind of backpack I need?

A good backpack should be on top of your list of backpacking gear for your outdoor adventures. When it comes to choosing the right backpack, you can start by making a list of the hiking pack features and aspects that you are looking for in your backpack and also consider the place you will be visiting. Note all the important features that are essential as well as the features that are necessary, but you can do without. Once you have your list, it will become very easy for you to choose the ideal backpack for your trip based on your needs.
