Frequently Asked Questions

Montem specializes in high quality gear at an affordable price. With thousands of 5-star reviews, dozens of #1 rankings, and numerous awards, the verdict is in. Montem is better than the competition at 1/2 the price.

Montem poles have been unanimously ranked above primary trekking pole companies such as Black Diamond and Leki. How, you ask? No middle men, no mark ups, no hidden fees. We take pride in devoting our time, effort, and passion to designing the highest quality gear we can while doing everything in our power to keep the price down.

We do this by limiting marketing expenses, minimizing website costs. We DO NOT cut costs on the actual product, which is exactly why we've been called the premier pole on the market.

The design, functionality, and quality is stellar. Simply put, we keep our prices low by not wasting money on what "the other guys" do.

It's super easy! Simply adjust your arms so that they’re at a 90 degree angle while using your Montem Trekking Poles. When adjusting the height of the poles, make sure the number on the top segment of the pole is the same as the one on the bottom.

Flip open the clasp, then proceed to make 1/4 turn adjustments to the screw until you get the desired tension. The bolt should be tight enough that when you close the clasp the pole supports your weight without sliding.

Yes! To adjust the length of the strap pull the tension block out. Once the tension block is removed, you may pull the loose end to tighten the strap, or pull the upper end to loosen the strap.

Totally worth the money. These sticks are fantastic - we use them regularly and the walks would be so much harder without them, particularly going up and down the hills. You won't be sorry if you buy a pair.

These Montem hiking sticks are really sturdy and strong, well made and easy to use. The handles fit nicely into your hand, and the adjustments to height and length are easy to change.

Took these on a four day, ~35 mile, backpacking trip into the Yosemite backcountry and these poles performed great. The extension mechanism was sturdy and kept the poles from sliding to their retracted position on the trail, and when retracted are nice and compact. The one thing that gave me pause before buying these was the price--I thought there was no way sticks under $50 could be quality poles. I'm happy to say I was mistaken, these could easily be more than double the price and they'd still be worth it.

Poles arrived as promised! I love these hiking poles! I am an avid hiker! I have already tested poles on three long hikes of 6+ miles each hike. Two of the hikes I was carrying a 10 lb pack! They are light and handle grips comfortable. Straps are padded to support hands. You will not be disappointed!

Great value and great product. Just used these trekking poles on a 10 day hiking trip out West! I had friends spend hundreds of dollars on trekking poles and were unhappy with them. These poles stood up to the conditions. Love the cork handles! Would highly recommend!

  25. No Slippage AT ALL

Very good poles. I used them while walking in Kakadu last weekend and unlike my last pair the fastenings did not slip.

  26. I Love Them

    Rated 5 out of 5

Great set of trekking poles. They are just right for the price; light and hold up very well. I have only used them once, however I am convinced this product we hold up very well for future hikes. Took them on a 43km hike on the Fundy Footpath in New Brunswick Canada. Extremely steep terrain, 20 something ups and downs 0 to 300 meters; total elevation gain at 1,700 meters.

  27. Happy Customer

    Rated 5 out of 5

Great product. It takes a bite to adjust the clamping units so nothing slides once you use them, but they make hiking so much easier.

  28. Andy M.

    Rated 5 out of 5

These are my first ever purchased pair of trekking poles. I wanted something lightweight and compact, but also strong enough to handle intense and challenging conditions. Needless to say, over the last 3 months, they’ve been used for light trail hiking, as well as intense trekking / backpacking / backcountry hunting in the Rocky Mtns. I’ve been super pleased with their durability and performance! They’ve seen all conditions — dry, wet, snowy, rocky, water crossings and much more. The foam handles remained comfortable, the extensions stay locked, and the tips did their jobs over a variety of terrain. Couldn’t be more pleased.

  29. J.K. E.

    Rated 5 out of 5

LIght and strong. The clamps that secure each extension loosen sometimes, causing the pole to shrink under body weight. I tightened them with pliers during my hike and it seemed like they will hold.

lifesavers - these were great going up the steep trails at Yosemite and even better when I was coming down. I'm 6'5" and the telescoping poles worked great to match my height. A few times when I "fell" forward, the poles were great at supporting me. Only one time did they collapse under my weight and I easily tweaked the adjustment so that they supported me. Highly recommended.

  31. MAN

    Rated 5 out of 5

These are lightweight and the hand grips really comfortable. Very easy to adjust the height as well. I did buy a pack of extra rubber tips if they fell off or for when they wear out.

  32. John, Ph.D.

    Rated 5 out of 5

The high ratings for these poles reflect their quality of construction, comfort, and versatility. They're strong, they lock securely, and disassemble easily for travel, eg plane. Lightweight and with comfy cork handles real plusses. All for a very good price. I did my homework and found the "quality" claims and rankings among the top ten or so best sellers to be frequently unreliable and unrealistic cost criteria. I ordered separately an assortment of pads from another source to increase my use of these poles in different conditions. I'd recommend trekkers / walkers to do the same. Here, too, read carefully the reviews. Some big name poles offered inferior tips, eg wore out quickly in urban environments or just slid off the pole.

  33. Mark

    Rated 5 out of 5

Only used a handful of times on hikes in the Shenandoah, (so dirt, mud and loose rock trails) but pleased so far. Easy to use and adjust on the trail with no slipping from the clamps. And I have sweaty palms so the grips are perfect for me. New(ish) brand I think, so durability will be interesting to watch over the next few seasons. But at this price point you have nothing to lose. Will definitely recommend to my hiking group.

These poles are my favorite pair by far compared to other high end brands. They held up on my recent backpacking trip that covered over 100 miles of the rocky mountains. And I'll definitely be using them for a long time.

  42. Jeanne

Great poles. I haven't used trekking poles before, although I have a trusty Leki singleton cane. I'm trying to walk more despite arthritis flare-ups (knees, back) and these are *very* helpful; keep me from listing to one side as I do when using only a cane on one side. Female, overweight (won't say how much--less than some other reviewers who mention weight), but poles are quite sturdy. Three thoughts that might be useful: (a) To adjust the extension clips, I figured out that I should tighten the screw-down a bit with the clip open (rather than closed). That seems to get snugger fit around the pole. (b) The protector tips that come with these are sadly good protection for carpets & inside of backpack and stuff, but don't hold up well to pavement; visible wear with the first 2-mile walk. The Montem heavy-duty tips were out of stock when I ordered the poles, so I'll be getting a different brand of tips for walks on pavement. (c) I like the clip that keeps the poles together, but found it fits more securely if I wrap a hook-and-loop zip tie around it, and then wrap once around the poles in addition to the clip. Also it's less likely to get lost in my pockets as I walk if I keep the zip-tie around the clip. Thank you for a great product, and best wishes on the start-up venture.

These trekking poles seem to be excellent. Since it has been in the upper 90's where I live, I have not had the opportunity to go on a hike with them but plan to do so as soon as the weather cools off. But I can say that the handles are comfortable and the poles are easily adjusted. Montem sent me a follow up email with details about how to adjust the poles according to my height. I also checked out a couple youtube videos to learn how to use my poles (seems easy enough). I have done a lot of hiking but never with trekking poles. My knees are starting to bother me so I think this will help a lot. We are going on a trip to Patagonia in December and plan to do a lot of hiking. From what I've read, the trekking poles should make a difference and save my knees. I also read many reviews before purchasing the Montem Ultra Strong trekking poles. All were excellent reviews. And the price is excellent. Looking forward to using my poles soon.

Bought these for hiking a Colorado 14er. First, I loved the pink! The poles needed consistent tightening along the way. Which could be because I didn't want to over tighten and strip the plastic the screw drives through. The grips were perfect! And temps changed, using gloves and sweaty palms didn't effect the grip. One of the screw on caps were lost along the way, not a huge deal, they still performsed well agains Gray's Peak.

Took these out for a test hike over the weekend and was pleasantly surprised - while they cost less than half the price of other poles out , the quality is 100% there. No slips, no wobbles, and very easy to assemble... Just a few quick snaps and they go from very compact to perfect for nearly anyone. The handful of emails from the manufacturer were a welcome addition as well - it's obvious that the founder of Montem is serious about customer satisfaction. Very highly recommended product.

I am a relatively new hiker. I have hiked off and on over the years but never really challenged myself to conquer the mountain, so to speak, until this summer. I've seen trekking poles for years and even purchased some for my mother a few years back to help her walk with more stability.Last week, I was hiking with a friend who brought her poles. I borrowed one of them to help with climbing over rocky terrain and from then on I was sold on the benefit of using them! I came home, did some research, and decided to order the Montem Ultra Strong Trekking Poles.I have hiked twice since receiving them. The day they arrived, I headed to the state park that is 5 minutes from my home and hiked one of the trails there. It's an easy trail to walk so I wouldn't have really needed the poles but wanted to learn to use them and try them out. Then, yesterday, I went on a more challenging 7.6 mile hike in the North Cascade Mountains with my family. It was a much more challenging hike with lots of elevation gain and hiking over varied terrain. Here are my thoughts on these trekking poles:On the first hike after I received them, I was more learning how to walk with them than really using them to help to help hike over uneven or difficult ground. The hike was an easy one with a friend and she and I both tried them out. While I could have easily done the hike without poles, I noticed that they were helpful in getting up the hills and that I didn't feel quite as tired going up the hills. They felt as if they helped propel me up the hill.On the second hike, which was much more challenging, I noticed a huge difference in my ability to feel more stable when moving over the rocky parts of the trail, in walking thru the creeks we had to cross, and in feeling more secure crossing the bridges which had only one side with railings installed. Going up hills, while still not easy for someone who's not quite in shape yet, seemed more "doable" and a little less difficult because, again I felt as if the poles helped propel me up the hill a bit. My 20 year old son even used them for a while because he has a knee issue and commented they seemed to help him feel less stress on his knees. The poles themselves are very easy to work. The flip lock adjustment system is smooth and simple to use. The flip lock feels a little flimsy, which makes me wonder if they'll hold up over time, but they held the poles firmly in the adjusted position with no sliding out of the adjusted position on the poles. The grips look like cork and feel very comfortable. Regarding the noise level using them, I found them to be fairly quiet with not much vibration noise. The few times they were noisy were the times when I tripped over them or connected one of them with the toe of my hiking boots. User error, not product fault! ha ha! There is a slight vibration noise occasionally when they may connect with a rock or tree root on the trail but overall they are quiet. They are lightweight and did not feel as if they added noticeable weight to my daypack.Overall, I love them and look forward to using them as I make myself get out and do more hiking. I think they are a huge benefit for moving along the trail in a more stable and efficient way and I like the color choices they have as well. Their winning price point is a huge attraction for me as I could not have afforded more expensive poles and did not want to purchase something that was heavy, cheap, and wouldn't last. I expect the use these poles for several years to come!I love supporting start-up companies who produce true top quality products so Montem will have my business and my recommendations to friends looking for hiking gear as well.

These were completely bulletproof during our hikes in Zion and the Grand Canyon this past week. Total lifesaver for my bad knees. I also had the chance to use some Black Diamond poles which felt a TINY bit more solid. But for less than half the price, I'm definitely not complaining. The rubber tips wore out after about 4 long hikes, so get spares of those too.

Great poles, have been using them for hiking in Colorado. Wife loves that she can adjust the tightness of the clamps without tools. Retailer (Montem) is excellent, sent several emails after ordering with pole instructions and another just to make sure everything was right. I am so impressed with these trekking poles I am thinking of ordering some yellow ones!

Just returned from my 1st hike w/ these. Loved 'em! I'm 6'3", 237 lbs w/ OA in both knees. I can't necessarily go long distances, but last time I went to a local site (shout-out to Red Mtn. Park) I hurt for days after. Today, I relied heavily on these Montem poles (they said Ultra Strong), and they were beautiful/ helped tremendously. I'm not very sore or aching at all. Now, are they a cure? No. But have they renewed & invigorating the joy of hiking? Oh yea!

You can buy more expensive poles, but you can't buy better poles. Recently went on a 30 mile hiking/camping trip to Yosemite with my daughter and sister. We all three had Montem trekking poles, and we all three were saved many, many times from falls, injuries, and mishaps by these poles. Not to mention the added ease of climbing (up and down) that these poles provide. Never did they slip or fail. They lock in to the height you set and the handles are extremely comfortable. Mine did vibrate more than the others, but that may be due more to my technique than the poles. Great purchase.

For years I'd hiked without poles, thinking that to get a set of poles I'd be looking at a price floor of $100, and I didn't think that was reasonable for what was a set of sticks. So when I'd seen these on the Wirecutter review site as a top rated set, at half the price I was expecting, I nabbed a pair each for my partner and I. Lightweight for the cost, the height adjustment is super easy (and secure -- haven't had them slip yet), comfortable cork grips and soft straps. And they really make a hike a lot less taxing on the knees and hips.

I bent my poles in a fall a few weeks ago and ordered these as a replacement. They are half the cost of my other poles but every bit as sturdy, functional, and are super comfortable in my hands. I even tried both grips and both are comfortable. I'd definitely recommend to anyone looking for affordable hiking poles.

  58. Jay

    Rated 4 out of 5

These are the only trekking poles I have ever used so I can't compare them to the more expensive competition out there. After I solved an initial issue with them gradually collapsing ( just had to keep tightening the adjustment) I thought they performed very well and I had no further issues. I can't imagine what a more expensive pole could have done better. The hand grip was good, even with my profuse sweating, and the tips held up very well over a 2 day 19 mile hike. The terrain ranged from hard rock to hard packed clay, to sandy gravel. The first day was all down hill, and the second day was all up hill. (Grand Canyon hike to the river and back) I came to understand the value of having poles in general as they really help take some of the shock off of your knees and hips. I had no malfunctions with these over the trip and feel sure I will get several more trips out of them. The only reason I didn't give them a 5 star is because I really have nothing to compare them to. For a first time hiker whose not sure if they will pursue a hiking/ backpacking pass time I think these would be an excellent purchase.

First time user of poles. Used these to hike mount Baldy/San Antonio. They were great for the gravel, rocks, sand and dirt. Adjust to the smallest of 2 feet and longest would probably work for someone 6' tall. Glad I got them.

I love that I'm supporting a small company, but I hope - especially with manufacturing being in china - that you develop some fair labor policies and get third party certifications to ensure adequate social justice and environmental stewardship.

These are truly great trekking poles. They're easy to adjust and kept the same length over several days of heavy use without needing much readjustment. During a 3 day backpacking trip in Yosemite I used them on mud, granite, gravel, and snow (with the appropriate baskets). They caught me during many falls on melting snow. They even prevented me from falling into icy, fast moving water during difficult stream crossings over logs and rocks. By the end of my trip, these were my most valuable piece of gear and the purchase I was most grateful for having made.

I'm new to trekking poles and have been researching them for a few months. I bought these and a competitor set (for my kids) at the same time. I really wish I had gone ahead and got a set of these for all of us. Right out of the box I could tell that the look and feel of the Montem poles were a much higher quality! I have been on 1 hike so far with these poles and have another planned for this weekend. The Montem poles are strong and light, and the cork grips are very comfortable. Also, I'm a big guy and am able to put my weight in them without any issues. Definitely recommend!

I am 6' 1" and weigh in at 300. ( I am working on the weight). I just bought these Trekking pole to put the old trusted Hickory stick aside and try some new technology. I am glad I did. What a lightweight convenient easy to use (and adjust) set of sticks. A friend and I went hiking together in Arkansas with these brand new right out of the box. We are both used to carrying a stick so we each got one of these from the set. I was skeptical about the size and strength until I used it whilst slipping on a wet rock creek crossing going steep downhill. Instincts said put the stick out to catch yourself. So I did. The Montem ULTRA STRONG is true to its description. No retraction, no slipping, and no busta my @ss. Thanks for a great product! I will be talking to my local shop about putting these on the shelf.

Finally had the opportunity to use my Montem trekking poles. Took them for a trek in my backyard up to Avalanche Lake in Glacier National Park.First love the grips very comfortable in my hands and didn't leave them sore. I'm a big guy and these poles were very durable holding my weight going down hill. One pole did slip a little. I blame that on me and not the pole. One half turn tighter and it was locked in good for the rest of the day.The carbide tips grip well on the smooth glacial rocks.Great product for the price. My only complaint, minus one star, was that it didn't come with larger baskets for the snow on winter hikes and snowshoeing. Most other poles come with both sets. Overall I really love my Montem poles.

I went on some solo hikes in Nevada and Arizona this past week, and I didn't have trekking poles. I wanted some because of the support given while hiking, just in case I needed a little distance between me and any wildlife, and in case I needed some makeshift crutch, etc.I did some research and these poles seemed like a good fit. I wanted aluminum for strength/cost ratio and cork handles for comfort. And, I didn't want to spend $150+, so these pole fit the bill perfectly. On the actual hike, they locked in place tight and were stable and secure. They helped me save energy on the ascent to Fortification Hill in the Lake Mead area, and even more importantly, they provided lots of stability coming down scree slopes on the return trip. I worked hard, but didn't slip or fall at all.I used them the following day in Red Rock Canyon on the Turtlehead Peak in 100+ degree weather. Again, they performed like a champ. They packed well in the suitcase, and cleaned up great. I didn't know better, so I left the rubber tips on, and those were demolished by the hard terrain. Use the rubber tips in softer areas, but hard, rocky surfaces will blow through those in a very short period.Sometimes you buy gear, use it once, curse the weight while carrying it, and then it sits in the closet, but these are useful and will be part of my hiking trips in the future.

I never experienced fatigue holding the poles all day long. It was indispensable in negotiating terrain that made Iron Mountain Trail seem like child's play in comparison.

I've been considering these poles for years but was reluctant to try them because I am very hard on my poles, and I take solo 100-milers in the backcountry (where a broken pole would be quite a problem for me.) But these poles are very strong.

When I reached out to Montem about getting new tips shipped out to me, they had excellent customer service, and super easy to deal with. When these poles are totally thrashed, I will be buying another pair.

I am not professional nor advance hiker by any means. We climb the Mt San Antonio Mt Baldy loop last Saturday, my experienced friend told us to get some trekking poles for the hike. After some online researches and price comparing, I decided to get some Montem Ultra Strong for the hike. Can't compare them to any other brand or any other trekking poles as I have never used anything else before. But these poles help me a lot in the climbing and also descending. I can't complain a bit for a pair of 50$ poles. So far so good, I might give another update when they actually break. Which, of course, I don't expect them to be any time soon

I am recovering from ankle surgery and opposite knee replacement. I have been using a cane to stabilize myself but my physician suggested trying Trekking Poles instead as I walk outdoors. I purchased these poles and I am pleasantly surprised at how much they have improved my stride and stability as I walk. I do recommend them for re-hab exercise. They are light and easily adjusted, and although they are light weight, thayare strong enough to provide that extra sense of balance that I needed. Next: Tekking !

These trekking poles are probably my favorite piece of equipment. I tend to use them for every trail condition in all different types of terrains. They're so light that it's easy to forget you have them on your hands. I wouldn't want to be without them.

Bought these for use in search and rescue training because I have a partially fused ankle and wanted to take some pressure off my feet. They worked Great! These are truly ultra strong as advertised and really took a beating during our 16-hour training but still look like new. It was nice to have them to lean against when I was exhausted. They came in extremely handy for pushing aside thick brush and searching for things without having to bend over or touch. The cork handles are very ergonomic and the straps very useful when you need your hands free. A very valuable piece of equipment for any outdoor enthusiast!

My father and I both used a set of these poles on a backpacking trip from Gooch Gap to Unicoi Gap on the Appalachian Trail. The Georgia portion has some extreme terrain with lots of steep rocky uphill and downhill portions. We used these poles coming down Blood Mountain in the rain and tackled the obstacles with ease. I am 205lbs and my father is 210. The poles supported majority of our weight on steep downhill sections. Not once did we have to readjust the poles. I used a fellow hikers expensive Leki's for a few miles and honestly saw no extra benefit in the expensive brand over these well priced poles. I will definitely get more than I bargained for with these. These poles are one of my best backpacking purchases yet. These are a must have!

These Poles hold up really well. They support a good percentage of my weight without slipping down. The grips feel good and absorbed a good amount of my sweat. My only complaint would be that the locking mechanisms are some sort of plastic instead of metal. They seem flimsy, but despite that they still do just fine. Also they are very very light for cheaper poles!

  89. Geoffrey

Took them out for about 50 miles so far. They are strong yet light. Comfortable grips. Will be using them to pitch a tarp so the max length is a plus. Adjustments were simple - no instructions necessary just common sense. I am well over 250 and didn't experience any shortening when putting pressure on them to go downhill or off small rock drops. Did not hear any of the rattling others have mentioned. I'm pretty pleased with this purchase, especially for the price. I'd like to be able to replace work-out tips but if the tips last as long as they should I don't see it as a major drawback.

I was skeptical about the locking fasteners on these trekking poles and concerned over the consequences if they buckled under the strain. I took a chance. Now over a year later, and many trips, they still perform as they did when brand new. They did well in the snow as well.

The grips are comfortable and do a good job of not sliding around when wet. The only con is a personal preference, and that is I wish the tops of the grips were more rounded for hand-over-grip holding.

I bought these for our Grand Canyon trip, due to recent problems with my knees, and they didn't disappoint. I'm glad I had them, given the uneven terrain, even on the developed trails. The adjustable strap fit around my wrist, which prevented one of them going into the Canyon at one point! Make sure to open the clamp locks and tighten the screws before you clamp them together and use them. They adjust for length very easily. I sometimes adjusted them to be shorter for ascents, and longer for descents. (Found a good video online that discussed this.) I'm going to use them (one or both) for some local (fairly undeveloped) trails this summer, even with the on-leash dog. One comment on packing into a suitcase - they wouldn't fit in my TSA-compliant carryon suitcase, even crossways, even completely collapsed telescopically. BUT, Joseph at the company pointed out that the three pieces pull apart (duh!), and they fit perfectly. They were at least an inch shorter that way. Your suitcase might be compliant, but be slightly longer, so this may not be an issue. In any case, they were really easy to put back together.

The poles themselves are excellent - light and responsive to use, though I admit that I have only taken them out once. In addition, and equally important: I had a very slight issue with one of my two poles, and contacted Montem about them (early yesterday, Sunday morning). They could not have been more helpful, and ended up sending me another pair, which arrived today Monday, in time for me to head off on my trip to the Canyons properly equipped. Amazingly good customer service.

I bought these for my girlfriend. This is the 2nd set of Trek poles I've purchased so I knew what I wanted for features in this pair. The Montem poles have lever locks for the adjustments and non-cork grips. The quality is excellent. But what sets this company apart is the follow-up communication; a nice email with sizing chart and another note from the company founder. Nice touch not seen much these days. Only used them once so far but I may be getting another pair to replace the other set ones (another brand) I have had for a while.

These are great hiking poles! We were replacing ones we've used for a couple of decades, and these are a great modern version. The clamps are wonderful. With the old ones we had to twist them to keep them in place, and the clamps make it far easier. We are hiking in the Swiss Alps for a month and using them most of the time. When I bought them I saw a review that complained that they slipped. But all you have to do is make sure the screw is tightened enough. My husband had no problem getting them tightened. We've been up and down very steep mountain trails, and these are fantastic.

I recently bought these as my first trekking poles. After reading the article on REI's Expert Advice site, I searched for the poles that were best for me. I needed strong poles—as I'm a heavy guy—and I wanted comfortable grips and straps that would handle sweaty palms—as I live in a humid place. I also wanted poles that collapse into themselves to minimize the space they use when stored on my pack. These have all of those features, so I ordered them and received them right away. These poles are amazing. They look and feel fantastic! I highly recommend them to anyone looking for well-designed yet affordable trekking poles.

Any support I needed, I had complete faith the poles would hold up.I've only used them once but I'm impressed with the quality I received from Montem. I Was finally able to use these after getting them last week. Went on a 10 mile jaunt today after 3-4 days steady rains. Started on gravel road, scree, and decided to play in the mud along river bank. Lots of debris from fallen trees, collapsed railroad ties (along old rail tracks followed) and also a wildflower open meadow to get a sampling. I'm 6'5" 250 lbs and extended the poles to their maximum opening. I wanted to see how these poles held up at full extension with varied terrain, and with some areas requiring me to lean pretty heavily on them. Bottom line they were great. I did have to tighten one of the clamps just once when I really leaned into one of the poles to scramble over some large downed trees and fallen boulders but after re-tightening the nut no problem. The poles never felt heavy and the cork handles were great - I didn't experience any tingling or numbness from nerve impingement as can happen with some handles. I did, however, switch out the basic rubber tip covers that come with the pole to their heavy duty ones - definitely worth getting! The rubber tips fit very snug and did not budge even in the thickest muck! My suggestion to the folks at Montem would be to include these heavy duty tips with each purchase of the poles and forget the basic ones they have now. Those tips are not that expensive so upping the cost of the poles by a few bucks really wont cause any issues with sales. Again, if u want really strong, ergonomically friendly, light, and greatly priced trekking poles don't hesitate getting these.

Bought two sets for my wife and I. After using a single pole for several years, decided to add on another after reading about the benefits. Used them on a weekend trip for the first time covering about 10 miles, and they held up great. I've been really happy with these poles! Got them at the last minute for the Appalachian Trail because they were cheap and had good reviews.I've found that I can put my full weight on them on descents and that the handgrips are really comfortable. Plus they're light. Really that's what I want out of poles. The only two cons that I've found: initially I had trouble getting the locking mechanisms tight enough, and the carbide tips can't be replaced (though the rubber tips can).Overall a really nice set of poles!

So first, these are great poles! They are very convenient, and telescope to a length you can fit into your airline luggage (I don't think you can take them in carry-on luggage, and haven't tried it to be on safe side). As The Wirecutter review points out, all the folding, blah blah fanciness doesn't matter in the woods because you don't fold them while you're on a trek.I bought these for each of my kids, and they like them. I had previously bought myself some Leki poles, the folding variety, but frankly, I bought them from the local outdoor store because I feel bad for always trying out stuff there and buying it on Amazon. So, I make sure I buy some stuff from them to make sure they're around when I need their advice. I would advise them to carry these poles. The Lekis were 140% more, and (1) they don't come with the rubber tips like the Montana, so they're really 160% more expensive), (2) they don't do anything that the Montems don't, and (3) well, the customer service at Montem is unbelievably wonderful.Son #2 was playing with his poles after removing them from the packaging, and I don't know exactly what happened, but he broke one of the telescoping mechanisms on one of the poles. I told him he'd better write to the company and see if that was covered under warranty. I figured this was a good way to teach the boys about being responsible, consequences, being the squeaky wheel, standing up for himself and asking for help.Amazingly, the CEO of the company wrote him back. Not. Even. Kidding! After reviewing the photos, he told the boy that while it appeared that this was not a legit warranty claim – I mean, let's face it, teenage boys aren't particularly delicate with new toys – they would go ahead and send him a replacement pole and hoped it would serve him well. How great is that?!So apparently this CEO-answering-your-e-mail is de rigeur for these guys, which is mighty handy. Got a question? Guy in charge answers it himself. He's even on the company chat help service. They do make a carbon fiber pole now, but I would say that aluminum is better for kids, since they will bend if someone starts, say, sword-fighting, rather than shattering as a carbon pole would. (I do not believe this was what caused the breakage, but it was probably something along those lines).

I will never understand why anyone would pay $150 or more for a set of Trekking Poles. These poles cost less than $50 and contain the same materials as $150 poles, but in most cases are lighter than the insanely expensive ones. The grip on these poles is probably their best feature. They are some type of synthetic cork that feels great. Me and my wife took these for a short 6 miler the other day and they are crazy strong, they are light, and very well balanced. I have been walking without poles for a very long time and regret every step I ever took w/o the Montem poles.

I love these poles. I was unsure about using trekking poles, as I never have before, but they were recommended for a recent hiking and wine tour in Chile. I was so glad I had these. Much of the hiking we did was in rocky brush uphill and downhill, and having trekking poles gave me another contact point for balance, and also allowed me to push aside brush. These poles were fantastic. Very easy to collapse for storage and easy to extend for use. The measurements made it easy to remember what size I liked and made it easy to extend again the next morning. The poles performed as promised, and were extremely light. I gave them to a friend to hold for me, and she mentioned how much lighter they were than her poles. The cork handles were very comfortable to hold and didn't get sweaty (despite ample opportunity). The straps were very easy to adjust to make it easy to grip the handles. I lent them to another person on the trip and he easily adjusted them for his hike. The only caution I have is that there are knobs on the levers used to hold the sections when assembled, and it was important to tighten these knobs, not just to close the levers. That made them much more secure. I did find that they very slowly started to shorten if I put all of my weight on them, but I found I liked that. It seemed like it made them more flexible and less likely to break, and made the poles give a little bit if I were falling and suddenly placed my weight on them. Almost like shock absorbers.I would now highly recommend poles on any sort of uneven terrain, and these poles in particular.

They work great and seem very well made. After my first walk I checked to see if there was any slippage in the length adjustment. Absolutely none on any of the 4 adjusters. OK, I have only used super cheapo poles from Walmart in the past. I wasn't convinced I needed poles, but I have some arthritis in my knees and back, so decided to try better ones. I slipped and fell last fall and banged my knee up bad. I saw a lot of folks using various brands of poles and have been pondering them since. I am for the record, a 5'5" woman and 130#. I was reluctant to spend $130-250 for poles. So I read the 2017 reviews and decided to give these a try based on price and positive review. I got an email explaining how to adjust and tighten them, followed the instructions and tested them full weight, no slipping. They are super light, but very sturdy. I had no fear of them coming loose. I ordered matte black and they are nicely finished. They offer features only seen on much more expensive poles. I LOVE them! Just LOVE them! NOW, I admit I used one pole only, because I am constantly taking photos and two poles are too much trouble most times. I switched hands frequently, depending on the slope and surface. My arms were definitely taking more weight, and that's the point! My knees felt fine after a tough 5 mile hike. Mud, dust, rocks, scree, volcanic debris...they worked just GREAT! When I go to the super bad stuff, like in Zion, I will try using two poles. I would highly recommend giving these a try. The owner of the company seems eager to help if any problems arise

Just received two sets, first impression is very good. They look well constructed, and comparable to much more expensive poles, I will be using them this summer in Glacier Park, and I will give an update.

I am greatly satisfied with my Montem trekking poles. the instruction were clear and my poles have supported me without slipping. I have recommended this company to my nephew who is looking for new trekking poles. I like the way the company contacted me by e-mail to see if everything was satisfactory. I will buy from Montem again and am recommending them to others.

I used my poles for the first time today. I went in a 6 mile hike in the beautiful hill country of Central Texas. Crossing streams and going up hills and down, they provided a great new confidence in my steps. They were lightweight and stayed where I set them. Everything I hoped they would be.

So far I love these. I have some other brands that were way more but weren't nearly as well put together as these. I only have 22 miles on these so far but I see no issues at all. PS I will be buying a second pair since my lovely wife keeps swiping mine

After three back surgeries, I have a difficult time walking and need to hold onto a shopping cart in the store. I used a cane when walking and was thinking about buying a roller walker when a friend suggested I try hiking sticks first. I bought these, and they work great. I can put downward pressure on the sticks and get the same relief as when using a cart. The sticks are lightweight and easily telescope. They are stronger if not extended to their full height. At this price, I think you should give them a try. And now for the real reason, I like them. Instead of looking like an old man with a walker, I look like a hiker. At least I like to think so.These helps me walk better!

I bought them for a 79 year old friend who walks 8-10 miles per day. He really likes the tips and EVA handles. The tips have little discs that prevent tips from sinking too far into ground. Since he's a Carolina fan, he loves the blue.

I took my poles with me to Kilimanjaro and they held up perfectly! I didn't have a single issue with them. I'm going on another trip in 2 months, and I'll be using these poles as I train, and on the actual hike.
